Psychiatry and Psychopharmacology
Psychopharmacology is the branch of science that develops and researches medications and their effects on mental disorders, human behavior, etc. Furthermore, psychopharmacology deals with how medications, supplements, and recreational drugs affect the body and how the body metabolizes each different medication. As such, this branch of science is much more involved than simple pharmacology. Those who develop medications to treat mental disorders that can alter the brain’s chemical function must have a thorough understanding of many branches of psychiatry science: neuroscience, clinical medicine, and mental disorder diagnosis and management.
Psychiatric Prescribers
Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP), and medical doctors are the professionals who can prescribe these medications to their patients. Therefore, psychiatrists and PMHNPs deal very closely with psychopharmacology since they prescribe medicines to their patients to help treat and manage mental disorders and distress at a higher rate than other medical professionals. Luckily, many psychiatric disorders can be managed appropriately using carefully prescribed medications to affect brain chemistry and lessen symptoms.
Psychiatrists and Psych NPs use their diagnoses and the symptoms a patient displays to prescribe specific medications. You can expect that any side effects and medication effectiveness will be monitored closely through follow-up visits. Furthermore, medication type, dosage, and frequency will be altered as needed. Also, tracking periodic blood levels may be necessary to monitor the medication levels within the body.
