Why We Take Our Time With Intake at Kentlands Psychotherapy
At Kentlands Psychotherapy, we believe the very first step in therapy—the intake process—sets the tone for everything that follows. Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic alliance, the relationship between therapist and client, is the single strongest predictor of success in therapy, even more than the type of therapy used. That’s why we don’t treat your inquiry call like a quick transaction. Instead, we dedicate about 30 minutes to every prospective client phone call to really get to know you, or the loved one you are calling about.
During your call, we go well beyond the basics of age, schedule, and symptoms. We want to understand what kind of therapist personality will make you feel truly heard, supported, and safe to doing the vulnerable work therapy requires.
Questions That Go Deeper
We ask thoughtful questions like:
Have you ever been in therapy before? What worked well for you?
What didn’t feel helpful?
- What do you know won’t work for you?
- What do you hope your therapist’s style might be?
These answers tell us so much more than a diagnosis ever could. For example, do you want a therapist who provides structure in the session, often taking the lead, and giving homework, or one who focuses more on listening, asking thought-provoking questions, and offering validating support? Do they prefer gentle guidance or more direct feedback? Understanding these preferences helps us make matches that are not only clinically appropriate but also personally resonant.
Checking In Along the Way
Our commitment to fit doesn’t stop once a client is matched. Both our clinicians and, when time permits, our administrative team, check in periodically to see how therapy is going. While we usually get it right the first time, we recognize that sometimes a different approach or personality may be more effective. And that’s okay. We welcome those conversations because our ultimate goal is to ensure clients feel empowered in their therapy experience.
Why This Matters
Too often, people seeking therapy are handed a list of names and left to figure it out alone. We believe clients deserve more than that. By investing time and care upfront, we give therapy the best possible start—for both the client and for the therapist. A strong match creates space for healing, growth, and meaningful progress.
At Kentlands Psychotherapy, we know therapy isn’t just about the right treatment—it’s about the right relationship. And that begins with how we listen to you from the very first call.
