Unsure If Medication Is Right For You?

That’s a reasonable question to start this conversation. Most people who come to us with questions aren’t looking for someone to talk them into taking medications; they want a thoughtful conversation with a clinical expert who will actually listen and share their knowledge as it relates to their specific situation. That’s what Kentlands Psychotherapy psychiatrists and doctoral-level psychiatric nurse practitioners offer.

“I’m not sure I even need medication.”

Many people aren’t sure, and in some cases they do not ned medication. Or they need fewer medications than they are currently taking. Ot they might benefit from a change in their medication.

Medication is one tool among several, and a good prescriber helps you figure out whether it belongs in your plan at all. At Kentlands, our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners spend extended time understanding your history, your symptoms, and what you’ve already tried before making any recommendations. Sometimes that conversation ends with a prescription. Sometimes it doesn’t. Either way, you leave with a clearer picture of where you stand and your options for feeling better.

“I tried medication before and I didn’t feel right.”

Your prior experiences are a critical part of the conversation. If a previous medication caused unwanted side effects, or simply didn’t do what you hoped, it tells us something useful about what to avoid, what to reconsider, and how to approach things differently this time. Psychiatric medication isn’t one-size-fits-all, and a prior bad experience doesn’t mean nothing will work. It just means we need to start with more information.

“I’m worried about side effects.”

You’re not alone, and we never brush past those concerns. Side effects vary considerably across medications, doses, and individuals, and a good prescriber will walk you through what’s typical, what’s rare, and what would warrant a call. We also check in regularly. Not just at the beginning, but as treatment evolves, because how you’re tolerating a medication over time matters as much as whether it’s helping.

“I don’t want to be on medication forever.”

Most people aren’t. Some medications are used for a defined period; others are long-term supports that can be tapered when the time is right. That timeline depends on your diagnosis, your response to treatment, and your own goals. We never work from a default assumption that once you start, you can’t stop. We take dependency concerns seriously and discuss them plainly, including what the research shows about the medications we recommend.

“I’m already on medication, but I’m not sure it’s really working.”

This is one of the most common reasons people come to us. Whether your prescription came from a primary care physician, a previous provider, or someone you’re no longer seeing, we’re glad to take a fresh look. We’ll review what you’re taking, how long you’ve been on it, what’s changed, and what you were hoping it would do. Sometimes small adjustments make a significant difference. Sometimes a different approach makes more sense. You don’t have to stay on something indefinitely just because stopping feels complicated.
