Gottman Relationship Checkup

The Gottman Method Couples Therapy assessment process is based on over four decades of research with more than 3,000 couples. It includes the Gottman Relationship Checkup which was designed from Drs. John and Julie Gottman’s Sound Relationship House Theory. Only a Certified Gottman Therapist (CGT) is authorized by the Gottman Institute to do the assessment. Angele Voegele is certified to offer this service.

Outside the DC metropolitan area? No problem.

This assessment series can be done in our Gaithersburg, Maryland office or entirely via our secure telemedicine platform (using the free and easy to use TeleHealth by SimplePractice Android or Apple App).

Assessment Components

Assessment Step 1: Initial Couples Session (90 min.)

The first assessment session covers three areas:

  • The couple’s narrative, the so-called Oral History Interview, which consists of a series of questions developed by the Gottman Institute.
  • Observing the couple briefly discuss an area of conflict to get an idea of how a couple processes conflict and to detect signs of the Four Horsemen.
  • The seven levels of the Sound Relationship House (SRH) and introduction to the Gottman Relationship Checkup, a confidential clinical tool that will help the therapist to evaluate your relationship’s strengths and challenges. Couples will complete the Checkup at home prior to Session 3.

Assessment Step 2: Two Individual Sessions (45 min. each)

The individual sessions are used to build trust with each individual and learn more about

each partner’s perspective, family-of-origin, history, possible mental health issues, hopes, expectations, and commitment to the relationship.

Session 3: The Feedback Session (90 min.)

In this session, the therapist will review the assessment findings and formulate feedback by integrating the information from the Oral History Interview, Conflict Discussion, Individual Sessions, and the Relationship Checkup questions. Couples can expect a thorough analysis of their relationship strengths and areas needing improvement.
