So You Need a Psychological Screening

After extensive research you have finally decided to “go for it” with bariatric surgery.   Congratulations on making this difficult decision.  Whether your weight loss surgery (WLS) will be classic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB), Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), an Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB) commonly referred to as a LapBand, Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD), or Duodenal Switch (DS) this decision reflects many major changes that lay ahead.

As you prepare for the procedure several tests and pre-surgical consultations are generally required.  Two common ones are pre-surgical screenings with Nutrition and Mental Health.    For many these requirements feel like just one more hoop to get through toward your goal.

However it is important to understand that your doctor and/or insurance company are looking for your psychological evaluation to cover 5 to 6 standard areas, so the psychologist you chose needs to be familiar with these areas in order for the report to be accepted.

If you are like most folks, you may be concerned about the possible intrusiveness of the questions.  “Will I be asked about childhood molestation, if I dislike my mother, or whether I wet the bed as a youngster?”  The answer is you don’t have to be asked these sorts of questions in order to be cleared for your surgery.   I have extensive experience in doing these evaluations.  I know what I need to ask, and I know what I don’t need to ask.

At the end of the interview, I will share my findings with you before you leave including ways you can use your personal strengths to maximize your surgery results.
